Declaration of Decolonize/Occupy Seattle Passed by the General Assembly on October 20, 2011 •Note: the name “Decolonize/Occupy” was not passed. Majority (63/40) of the GA insisted on keeping the name “Occupy Seattle.” DECLARATION OF DECOLONIZE/OCCUPY SEATTLE AFFIRMATION of Decolonization of Seattle with Northwest Indigenous Peoples WHEREAS, those participating in “Decolonize/Occupy Seattle” acknowledge that the United States of America is a colonial country, and that we are invaders and squatters upon stolen indigenous land that has already been occupied for centuries, Seattle being the ancestral land of the Duwamish and Suquamish people; and WHEREAS, indigenous people of this land have continued to resist the violent conquest, oppression, exploitation and victimization by the invaders and colonizers since they first arrived on this continent; and as a result have endured a great amount of trans-generational trauma and woundedness; and that their experience strengthens this movement to expose those on-going inhumane crimes; and WHEREAS, after centuries of disregard for the welfare of future generations, and the repeated disrespect and exploitation of the Earth, we find ourselves on a violated and polluted planet, lacking the Indigenous people’s wisdom and knowledge to live in balance, harmony and at peace with the community of Life; and WHEREAS, the term “occupation” has been used by imperialists to colonize indigenous lands WHEREAS, the term “occupation” has also been reclaimed by militant workers of color from Latin America (Oaxaca, Buenos Aires, South Korea, China among other places) to describe their occupation of factories, schools and neighborhoods, to strike back against the oppressive forces led by racism and capitalism. It is in this context that we use the term “occupy” WHEREAS the borders of the United States of America are a colonial construct based upon the violent destruction of indigenous land across the continent and therefore illegitimate in our eyes WHEREAS this land is currently occupied by descendants of slaves kidnapped from the African continent, as well as economic refugees forcibly displaced by the forces of capitalism and imperialism around the world, therefore AFFIRMED, that we prioritize the involvement of indigenous sovereign people in the redesigning and rebuilding of a new way of living on their ancestral land in the context that there is one mother of us all, our earth mother; and As a Decolonization Statement to the national “Occupy” movement and to indigenous members who have been excluded by the colonialist language used to name this movement, it is declared that phrase “Occupy Seattle” is reframed to the inclusive cross-cultural term “Decolonize/Occupy Seattle” to affirm the guidance and participation of indigenous peoples; and to affirm the history of militant labor struggles associated with the term “occupy” Awakening to compassion and extending an open hand of friendship and partnership, we hereby invite indigenous members of the Pacific Northwest and all displaced peoples to collaborate with us in this event remembering and reawakening to our original identity as humane beings – that is now initiated on this continent and worldwide simultaneously. We intend to facilitate the process of healing and reconciliation and implore Indigenous Peoples to share their knowledge and wisdom of stewardship of the earth, water, fire and air to inspire and guide us restore to pure democracy rather than representative democracy as design failure in governing for collective survival; and to initiate a new era of cooperation and peace that is cross-cultural, intergenerational, inclusive and universal in practical application upon Mother Earth with the original indigenous inhabitants of this land.

Declaración de Descolonizar/Ocupar Seattle Se aprobada por la Asamblea General el 20 de Octubre 2011 • Nota: el nombre “Decolonize/Occupy” no fue aprobado. Una mayoría (63/40) de la AG insistió en mantener el nombre “Occupy Seattle.” DECLARACIÓN DE DESCOLONIZAR/OCUPAR SEATTLE AFIRMACIÓN de Descolonización de Seattle con los Pueblos Indígenas del Noroeste MIENTRAS, lxs participantes de “Decolonize/Occupy Seattle” se reconocen que los Estados Unidos de America es un pais colonial, y que somos invasores y ocupantes ilegales de tierra indígena robada que ya ha estado ocupada por siglos, Seattle es la tierra ancestral de lxs pueblos Duwamish y Suquamish; y MIENTRAS, los pueblos indígenas de esta tierra han continuado resistiendo la conquista violenta, la opresión, la explotación y persecución por lxs invasores y colonizadores desde que llegaron por la primera vez a este continente; y como resultado han aguantado una gran cantidad de trauma transgeneracional y un estado de herido; y que su experiencia fortalece este movimiento para exponer esos crímenes inhumanos en curso; y MIENTRAS, después de siglos de desprecio para el bien estar de las generaciones futuras, y el irrespeto y la explotación de la Tierra, nos encontramos en un planeta contaminado y violado, sin la sabiduría de los pueblos indígenas ni el conocimiento para vivir en balance, armonía y en paz con la comunidad de Vida; y MIENTRAS, el término “ocupación” se ha utilizado por imperialistas para colonizar tierras indígenas MIENTRAS, el término “ocupación” tambíen se ha reclamado por trabajadores militantes de color de América Latína (Oaxaca, Buenos Aires, Corea del Sur, China entres otros lugares) para describir su ocupaciones de fábricas, escuelas, y colonias, para contraatacar a las fuerzas opresoras dirigidas por el racismo y el capitalismo. Es en este contexto que utilizamos la palabra “ocupar” MIENTRAS, las fronteras de los Estados Unidos de América son construcciones coloniales basadas en la destrucción violenta de las tierras indígenas en todo el continente y por eso son ilegítimas desde nuestra perspectiva MIENTRAS, esta tierra está ocupada actualmente por descendientes de esclavos sucuestrados del continente Africano, así como refugiados económicos desplazadaos a la fuerza por las fuerzas del capitalismo y imperialsmo en todo el mundo, por lo tanto AFIRMADO, que damos prioridad a la participación de los pueblos indígenas y soberanos en rediseñar y reconstruir una manera nueva de vivir en su tierra ancestral en el contexto que hay solo una madre de todxs nosotrxs, nuestra madre tierra; y Como una Declaración de Descolonización al movimento naciónal “Occupy” y lxs miembrxs indígenas quienes han estado excluidxs por el lenguaje colonialista usado para nombrar este movimiento, está declarado que la frase “Occupy Seattle” está reformulada al término inclusivo y transcultural “Descolonizar/Ocupar Seattle” para afirmar la dirección y participación de pueblos indígenas; y también para afirmar la historía de luchas laborales militantes asociadas con el término “Ocupar” Despertando a la compasión y extendiendo una mano de amistad y colaboración, por la presente invitamos lxs miembrxs indígenas del Noroeste del Pacífico y todos los pueblos desplazados a colaborar con nosotrxs en este evento de recordar y despertar de nuevo a nuestra identidad como seres humanos—que se inicia ahora en este continente y en todo el mundo simultáneamente. Tenemos la intención de facilitar el proceso de curación y reconciliación e imploramos a los pueblos indígenas a compartir su conocimiento y sabiduría de cómo cuidar a la tierra, el agua, fuego y aire para inspirarnos y guiarnos a restaurar a la democracia pura en el lugar de democracia representativa como el fracaso del diseño en gobernar para la supervivencia colectiva; y para iniciar una nueva era de cooperación y paz que es transcultural, intergeneraciónal, inclusiva y universal en la aplicación practical sobre la Madre Tierra con lxs habitantes indígenas originarixs de esta tierra.
