TO THE STUDENTS OF THE ZAPATISTA LITTLE SCHOOL
TO THE ADHERENTS OF THE SIXTH
TO THE INDEPENDENT MEDIA
TO THE NETWORK AGAINST REPRESSION AND FOR SOLIDARITY
TO THE ZAPATISTA SUPPORT BASES
TO THE ZAPATISTA ARMY OF NATIONAL LIBERATION
From the Universidad de la Tierra of Oaxaca we pronounce ourselves students of the Zapatista Little School and adherents of the Sixth Declaration of the Lacandon Jungle in relation to the recent aggressions that our compañeras and compañeros of the support bases of the ejido 10 de abril, autonomous municipality in rebellion 17 de noviembre, suffered on the part of the “democratic” CIOAC.
On February 1st, the compañer@s of the Good Government Council of the Caracol of Morelia denounced the attack perpetrated by the Independent Center of Agricultural Workers and Campesinos (CIOAC) where compas were critically injured and others sustained minor injuries, as well as the agressions that the personnel of the Hospital San Carlos received from CIOAC, those who obstructed the realization of their activities at all costs. Denunciation here [Spanish, see bottom of this post for English translation]: http://enlacezapatista.ezln.org.mx/2014/02/01/la-junta-de-buen-gobierno-corazon-del-arco-iris-de-la-esperanza-del-caracol-iv-torbellino-de-nuestras-palabras-denuncia-la-agresion-que-sufrio-bases-de-apoyo-del-ejido-10-de-abril-del-municipio-auto/
With pain and rage we raise our voice in the city of Oaxaca. This aggression is the mirror of the collapse of the bad governments and the media at the service of the power and the clumsy decisions they want to hide, dress up and silence. They won’t be successful, just like they won’t be able to attack zapatista autonomy. We consider this aggression within the framework of the violence and repression that the whole country is living today and especially an attack against independent and autonomous organizations. Here in Oaxaca they constantly attack all those who oppose the deadly megaprojects and those who fight against political imprisonment—inside and outside of jail.
We must remind the students and remember as students [of the Escuelita] that the compañer@s opened the doors of their homes to us, shared with us their struggle, gave us the chance to know their resistance from the inside and see with our own eyes the organization of daily life and rebellion. Today we join in the denouncements that compañer@s of different parts of the world are making, we embrace all of the compañer@s zapatista support bases of Ejido 10 de abril and we say to them from Oaxaca that YOU ARE NOT ALONE! IF THEY MESS WITH THE ZAPATISTAS THEY MESS WITH ALL OF US!
We make a call to all of the adherents of the Sixth Declaration and the students of the Zapatista Little School to protest and mobilize for our zapatista compas, each one in their own modes and forms according to their possibilities and geographies. This is the moment to demonstrate that the Little School and the latest forces of the Zapatista peoples are building bridges with national and international civil society. We will use our spaces, streets and plazas to disseminate and inform about this aggression and to prevent that it be repeated.

The good government council, Corazón del Arco Iris de la Esperanza from Caracol IV (Torbellino de Nuestras Palabras) denounces the aggressions suffered by our compañeros and compañeras, the bases of support from the communal land settlement “10 de Abril” in the Rebel Autonomous Municipality “17 de Noviembre,” Chiapas, Mexico. Provoked by members of the “CIOAC Democrática” and led by Miguel Vázquez Hernández and Jaime Luna González.
In 2007 they made their first attempt at provoking us into taking our land, recuperated in 1994, with a simple sketch of the property they tried to pass off as their claim to the land.
On October 18, 2013 they returned with another attempt to provoke us and take our recuperated land, paid for with the blood of our fallen compañeros. On this day they resurveyed the land in order to displace us. We saw that the the way that they came to make a passageway in 2007 was totally off-line, though they tried to justify it with the same simple sketch of the property.
The most recent aggressions that our compañeros from the “10 de Abril” community suffered took place on Monday January 27, 2014. At 7:30 that morning, 250 members of the “CIOAC Democrática” from the “20 de Noviembre” community, in the official state municipality of Margaritas, Chiapas, came to provoke us.
When they arrived at our recuperated land, the first thing they did was to start cutting down the signs at the entrance to the community. The just destroyed one, and the other one they burned.
The second thing they did was to cut down trees that we keep as an ecological reserve, which mattered nothing to them. They used five chainsaws to cut down down 9 pine trees, 40 oaks, 35 coffee plants and smashed 3 banana trees with the trees they felled and ate a cluster of bananas.
The turned the felled trees into boards and firewood. They didn’t take them for home use, rather they stole them in order to sell them. They filled a total of 41 pickup trucks.
When they returned to their homes, they yelled out the names of two compañeros threatening to return and then we will see what will happen to them.
We evaluated the cost of what they stole and it totaled $40,530 (pesos) plus the medical costs for our wounded compañeros.
On January 30, 2014 at 6:40AM they came back to fulfill their promises of violence previously mentioned. They arrived in 18 Nissan pickup trucks with roughly 300 people ready for violence.
They got down from their trucks about 30 meters away from our compañeros and the truck that was in front attempted to run us over despite our signaling to stop, but they didn’t care.
When they got off their trucks our aggressors were ready to attack us with machetes in hand, and they also brought rocks from their homes given that they had in the trucks.
Our compañeros resisted, not answering any of their aggressive and insulting questions; with difficulty, we share here the insults our compañeros received. After a good while without responding to the aggressors, they told our compañeros that those who don’t respond are vaginas and penises.
Later the bases of support, our compañeros, tried to tell them to stop harassing them because the land was recuperated since 1994 and that is why they are there taking care of it. Just by saying this alone, the aggressors from the CIOAC Democrática paused for five minutes, maybe to agree on what action to take, and after that pause they started to throw rocks at us.
So they begin to throw rocks at us. While some did that, others looked for heavy sticks to hit us with.
Immediately our compañeros started to fall with blunt force wounds to their eyes, head, nose and legs. We have 3 compañeros with severe wounds who are: Sebastian (age 20), with a left zygomatic fracture, left ophthalmic trauma, severe retinal bleeding, severe inflammation of the retina, skull fracture and a nasal fracture and now in critical condition with the risk of losing his vision. Under neurological observation.
Ismael (age 22) open nasal fracture, edema of the lips, brain trauma, and left shoulder contusion.
Jhony (age 32), brain trauma, left ocular trauma, and eyelid edema.
In addition there are 3 compañeros with less severe wounds:
Mateo, (age 55), with a laceration of 5 centimeters wide and 1 centimeter deep; Rodolfo (age 26) with a head wound on the left side, 3 centimeters wide and 1 centimeter deep; Ernesto (age 37), with a head wound on the left side, 3 centimeters long and 1 centimeter deep.
The leaders of these violators of our human rights are these despicable people: Arnulfo Gonzalez Jimenez, who had a 22 caliber pistol, and Jaime Luna Gonzalez, they fired said arms and they began to hit us followed by their accomplices Tranquilino Gonzalez, bilingual educator, Jose Lino Alvarez and Humberto Lopez originators from the “20 de Noviembre” community.
The people they had with them were paid $100 pesos each to carry out this attack against us.
When we saw our compañeros fall we sought emergency care at San Carlos hospital in Altamirano. Those who work there came to pick up our wounded but the aggressors of the CIOAC Democrática who blockaded the highway that crossed from Altamirano to Comitán and San Miguel and wouldn’t let them through.
While they were hitting our compañeros, Francisco Hernandez Aguilar of Rancheria El Nanze arrived, who was previously from la OPDDIC, is now the leader of the ORCAO, and is currently armed with high caliber weapons: 2 AKA-47, 1 AR-15, 1 M-1, which we’ve already reported.
The ambulance driver Filomeno Hernández García and the ambulance were kidnapped and taken to their community. The doctor Edgar Ulises Torres Rodríguez and a sister who accompanied them by the name of Edith Garrido Lozada were also taken. Upon their arrival to the “20 de Noviembre” community, they began to hit them in the face, ribs and head. The sister Edith Garrido Lozada was hit by men.
The ambulance was accompanied by another truck, a 6 cylinder Chevrolet pickup, driven by another sister Patricia Moysén Márquez with the sister Martha Range Martínez as co-pilot; they were also forced to get down from the pickup by tojolabal women and for refusing to give up the keys to the pickup they were hit and physically mistreated. They took the driver’s coin purse that held her personal documents.
Behind this violence refreshed by the bad governments, are the good teachers who teach these local leaders how to finish off our natural resources.
We know that Enrique Peña Nieto is the shameless overseer selling all our natural resources and our Mother Earth. Therefore what his students are doing to us is what he is teaching with his projects of death.
Now the child butler of Chiapas, Manuel Velazco Cuello, when he won the [governorship] said he respected our autonomy and our good government councils and in the first days of January 2014, he lies to us again saying he respected our recuperated lands from 1994.
The chief of the official state municipality of las Margaritas, Mr. Manuel Culebro Gordillo, is nothing more than a lying thief and accomplice of the leaders of the CIOAC Democrática.
These three clerks of the big transnational businessmen, the overseer Enrique Peña Nieto, the steward Manuel Velazco Cuello, and the chief Manuel Culebro Gordillo, have an additional debt to us for the bloodshed of our compañeros and that has no price.
It is without a doubt that these people are genuinely corrupt liars and thieves who have no shame. A clear example of the child steward [current Chiapas governor Manuel Velasco Cuello] is during his campaign when he stole millions of pesos from the public and when he took his seat there was hardly any money left in the budget. That’s how all those thieves are, protected by the same laws they create.
